One of the ideas I often give my clients and students for finding content for their social media strategies is to think about fun and interesting holidays that relate (or don’t) to their business. The obvious holidays to celebrate on social media are all the health-related awareness days, weeks and months, which are good for everyone, but lesser known, more unique celebrations offer a new way to promote your business. I once suggested my daycare participate in “Chicken Dance Day” and call the media for a good news story opportunity. I mean, come on, who wouldn’t want to see preschoolers doing the chicken dance? Here is one quirky celebration for each month of the year to get your (chicken) juices flowing. There is something in each one that can be shared on social media, so don’t forget to take pictures.
1. Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day, January 28
I don’t know anyone that can resist the tempting pop, pop, pop of a good bubble wrap squish. Put a bubble wrap game on your Facebook wall for clients to virtually pop. Share bubble wrap facts. Give bubble wrap out to people in your waiting area. Why not get your staff to make bubble wrap sculptures and have your fans vote on their favorite?
2. Random Acts of Kindness Day, February 17
So many possibilities with this one. Give something away on your website, Facebook or Twitter. Ask your office mates to pay for the coffee of the person in line behind them. Hand out appreciation notes or anonymous snacks. Leave a $20 bill behind with a note for whichever person happens to find it.
3. Celebrate Your Name Week, First Full Week of March
While this week was set up to celebrate your personal name, why not extend it to your corporate identity? Tell us how you came up with that perfect name for your business. Or share the interesting and diverse names of your employees…with their pictures! This is a great way for your fans to get to know your staff.
4. Grilled Cheese Month, April
Everyone loves a good grilled cheese sandwich. The best one I’ve ever had was a Crocque Monsieur at a local bistro. If you’re a restaurant, this is easy…a new featured sandwich every week of the month. Even if you’re not a restaurant you can share recipes for interesting grilled cheese sandwiches, or maybe host a poll for the favorite grilled cheese in your town. Go whole hog and host a grilled cheese tasting competition.
5. Two Different Colored Shoes Day, May 3
Yes, I am suggesting you ask your staff to wear two different shoes to work today and post pics on Facebook. Get your fans to vote on the best mis-match. It’s another fun way for your fans to learn about your staff.
6. Lemons and Mangoes Month
Have a BYO lemon dessert day at the office. If you’re an interior decorator, show us how to use bright yellow and orange in our homes and offices. Nutritionists, tell us all the benefits of drinking lemon water. Have a lemonade stand and give the money to charity.
7. Teddy Bears’ Picnic Day, July 10
If you’re business caters to kids, this is a great day to celebrate. Think bear-shaped cookies to decorate, teddy bear coloring pages, and maybe special teddy bear “clinics” where the bears get boo boos bandaged up.
8. Poet’s Day, August 21
Share your favorite classic poetry, or have fans or staff submit their own creations. Host a Haiku contest online, or a spoken word event at your office.
9. Happy Cat Month, September
Nothing gets the internet fired up like a cute cat picture, so here is your chance to put some cuddly kitties on your page all month long!
10. World Cardmaking Day, October 5
This is a personal favorite of mine as cardmaking is my hobby. I cannot tell you how many times I am thanked for sending a thank you card to a client or contact. Handmade cards get noticed and remembered. Have a card making party for your staff and have them send the cards out to your most loyal customers. Even if you don’t put the pictures on Facebook and Twitter, this one will have a big impact.
11. Cliché Day, November 3
You’ll see more clichés than you can shake a stick at today, so go with the flow and enjoy the ride!
12. National Dice Day, December 4
In-store shoppers could roll the dice for a discount and I’m sure there’s an app that would allow online shoppers to do the same. Share the best deals with your fans and followers. Talk up your favorite dice games, show pictures of unique dice, or dice themed crafts.
It’s really easy to take any holiday and use it to your business advantage. Part of what the collective we loves about social media is the ability to get to know the business owners and staff on a more personal level. Take advantage of that and take a few risks…but perhaps celebrating World Nude Day would show a little too much personality. Click here for more ideas for holidays to celebrate on social media.
