You took my quiz “What Type of Anti-Hero Social Media Marketer Are You?” and ended up with The Maverick, did you? (Or, maybe you’re here because you’re genuinely curious about how these digital badasses get away with so much.)
I’ve got you. In this blog post we’re diving into the archetype of The Maverick Anti-Hero Social Media Marketer. We’re going to talk about how you can take your bold confidence (some might call it audacity) and harness it in your Social Media Strategy.
Inside the Mind of The Maverick
Of all of the eight Anti-Hero Social Media Marketer archetypes, The Maverick is in a category of their own.
Known for bold moves and confidence, while others are overthinking their posts and over-researching their keywords, The Maverick is trusting their instincts, breaking the rules and shaking things up.
You don’t analyze how every post might affect your brand, and you are NOT here to play it safe. The Maverick is known for making noise, leading the industry with boundary-pushing content. You’re known within your circles as being unorthodox in your methods, testing new ideas with an audacity that most people could only dream of.
You’re not trying to be viral, you want to shake things up and get a reaction. And that often sparks into something that connects with your audience on a whole new level.
Most people tiptoe around controversy. You tap into it. With a hammer.
Inside The Mind Of The Maverick Anti-Hero Social Media Marketer
The Maverick is a game changer by nature. A rule breaker. A perennial tester of the boundaries that hold others back.
Let’s be real here. You can pick out templated content a mile away and it makes your skin crawl.
You feel pretty comfortable posting a story without getting gussied up because you are confident in the value you provide to your audience.
You’re not aiming for a perfectly curated Instagram grid. You like to try new things on the regular and see what sticks.
Your content moves as fast as you do and you’re not afraid to spontaneously try something new.
Your Natural Behaviours on Social Media:
- Raw, unfiltered content, even if it ruffles feathers. You’re comfortable talking about the latest industry drama with your honest opinion.
- You’re unorthodox, so much of your content has the ‘surprise factor’ because you love to post what no one else saw coming.
- Your content borders on audacious because you push the boundaries that the rest of the folk in your industry hold sacred.
- You’re confident. You take big bets on new ideas because you’d rather post a glorious flop than a forgettable win.
- Your bold nature = pure momentum. If you get an idea, it’s online within the hour.
You’re downright allergic to coming across as too polished and your audience LOVES you for it. They’re sticking around because they never know what you’ll say next.
Your Strategic Edge
While everyone else is tweaking carousels and coming back to their VA’s with a 5th round of changes to the same set of graphics, you’ve already thought of an idea, drafted a #flawsome caption and hit post. You’re the embodiment of ‘done is better than perfect’; a favourite mantra of mine.
You have performance analytics in hand before most people get a post approved. And that is powerful as hell.
You build trust not by spending hours on planning the steps, but by showing up, doing what you say, and letting people see you try things in real time.
Your content hits different because you go first, you go loud and you go off-script.
People trust you because you do what others are scared to attempt. Even when you miss, you own it.
You’re not scared to fail in public and that’s what makes you unstoppable.
Potential Pitfalls
The same fire that spurs you on can also burn you out. And fast.
The Maverick can experience creative highs and crashing lows, and often there is no middle ground to keep them consistent. Consistency is queen when it comes to social media, but The Maverick struggles with structure and balks at the idea of following a content calendar. This lack of consistency can mean you’re not showing up in the algorithm with your latest content because it’s been a minute since you last posted.
You want to spark dialogue, but when the comment section goes off, you sometimes move on to the next new thing before reaping the full benefits of your engagement success!
Your love of new ideas means you sometimes shelve content that has miles and miles of usefulness left. Recycling content could ease your capacity issues, but without a system in place to remind you to do it, you often forget.
I’m not saying you need to do anything differently, but you could use your time better. With a little planning and consistency your boldness and confidence will be much more powerful.
Your Social Media Strategy, Anti-Hero Style
For you, there are no recycled guru tactics or $9 copy and paste templates. You just need a system in place that lets you strike hard and fast with your boldest self. And maybe a few minor tweaks to allow for recycling ideas that worked.
Here’s how to build strategy without killing your spark:
- Create launchpads, not content columns. As much as I love a curated system, this won’t work for you. Think up themes that can contain your ideas to make sure they stay relevant to your business without taking away the confidence when you’re posting. An example might be a theme called ‘rants’ which can contain your genius without making you feel caged.
- Post in the moment, but REFINE afterwards. Keep posting in the moment, but remember to go back and see what worked, then remix and elevate your best content.
- Track your progress. Not just the likes, but reactions. Save posts that make people feel something and then push the next post further. Pay close attention to the words people use because that is GOLD for your future content.
- Pick a single platform to focus on. Without a content calendar and strict strategy, diversifying your content across multiple platforms will suck all of your energy.
When you have the budget, you’ll benefit from working with a virtual assistant who can take your best content and recycle and repurpose it it across multiple platforms for you. Look for someone who is organized and understands the movement you want to make online, but is also willing and able to push you to be better, more focused, more efficient and systematised.
Try This Tactic: Low Effort, High Voltage
Call your shot. Publicly.
The next time you’re about to do something weird, bold, or potentially brilliant, tell your audience before you do it.
Post something like:
“Trying something tomorrow that might tank my engagement or unlock a new niche. No clue which. Stay tuned.”
Why it works:
- It builds tension
- It shows guts
- It holds you to the fire (This is often the reason I will post things like this…because if I say it publicly I’ll have to follow through!)
And if you really want to lean in I dare you to post your worst idea on purpose.
Strategy Isn’t Optional. Even for The Maverick.
Tactics come and go. And as a Maverick Anti-Hero Social Media Marketer, you already know your content style is going to evolve with every new idea, launch, or business pivot.
But strategy? That’s your backbone.
If you’re ready to ramp up your momentum, you need to give your bold moves a framework so you can follow up and keep improving and moving forward.
The Social Media Strategy for Anti-Heroes Course wasn’t made for marketers who play safe. It’s made for people like you. Rule-breakers with vision who just need a system that moves as fast as they do.
