Sometimes being a marketing professional in Canada is frustrating. All the stats, all the case studies, all the info is based in the US. Yeah, we’re similar, but, well… we’re really quite different, too. I decided to search out some of the best Canadian marketing blogs for you to save you a little time. Some of these will be familiar, I’m sure, but I’ve found several that are new to me, and hopefully to you as well!
Two years ago when I attended Social Media Marketing World Marcus Sheridan, The Sales Lion, was top of my list of must-see sessions. I first learned about Marcus in the foreward of Jay Baer’s book YouTility, which became, and still is, a foundational book for my marketing philosophy. Everything both Jay and Marcus were saying resonated with me and I still espouse the Youtility philosophy on this blog: make it useful.
Often when I talk to new business owners about their social media strategy, or with experienced business owners who are new to social media marketing, I suggest they start a blog, write an ebook, create a list of tips, or develop a free giveaway for customers. Sometimes the business owner will look at me skeptically as if to ask “Are you nuts?” There is a belief out there that giving information away for free will result in lost business. The idea being that if you explain everything on a blog, or in an ebook, for free, nobody will need to buy your services. But that’s just wrong!
Successful blog promotion comes down to having a process in place. It has taken me five years to get this process down pat for myself, but I’ve finally got one that works for me and I thought I’d share my process with you. I’m sure there are better ways to do some of this, but for now, it works and it’s easy to manage.
You may have heard the hullabaloo surrounding Dean’s Flowers, a local, independent flower shop who has attracted some unwanted attention from a big, online competitor. I asked several SEO experts for their tips on what Holly could do to combat the grey hat tactics being used against her business. These SEO tips will help anyone trying to improve their search results!
There are a multitude of SEO plugins you can install for your WordPress website/blog, and Yoast SEO is probably the most popular. It is the one I use on this website, as well as many client websites. Essentially it helps you put all the SEO data in all the right places so Google will find you more often. (Tweet This.) Using a simple green, yellow, red light system, it tells you how good your SEO is. You are aiming for all green lights, of course!
Not only were many of the world’s biggest and brightest thought leaders from the social media and digital industries present (Guy Kawasaki, Mari Smith, CS Penn, Marcus Sheridan, Jay Baer, Chris Brogan, and so on, and so on), they were accessible, approachable and helpful. I attended sessions on Facebook Advertising, Instagram, Pinterest, marketing, blogging, SEO and more. I am rejuvenated and raring to go.
